The Trail
Connecting Featherston through to Masterton and beyond
Wairarapa Five Towns Trail
The proposed Waiohine River Bridge forms part of a much bigger vision for the future of walking and cycling in the Wairarapa. The Wairarapa Five Towns Trail Network is an ambitious community-led project that aims to create more than 200 kilometres of connected recreational trails linking Masterton, Carterton, Greytown, Martinborough and Featherston.
While the full network is still being developed, several trail sections are already open and enjoyed by walkers, runners, and cyclists. Over time, the network will provide safe, scenic routes through vineyards, river valleys, farmland, native landscapes, and some of the region’s most distinctive towns and villages.
The Wairarapa Five Towns Trail Trust was established to help bring this vision to life. Guided by a comprehensive master plan, the Trust works alongside iwi, local councils, landowners, community groups, volunteers, and regional partners to develop trails that not only connect places but also celebrate the stories, history, and culture of the Wairarapa.
The Waiohine Bridge is a vital missing link in this growing network. By creating a safe crossing between Carterton and Greytown, the bridge will help unlock future trail connections throughout the region and contribute to a world-class recreational asset for residents and visitors alike.
Together, the Five Towns Trail Network and the Waiohine Bridge project are helping shape a more connected, accessible, and vibrant Wairarapa for generations to come.
