The Carterton District Trails Trust (CDTT) has made strong progress toward creating a safe, enjoyable walking and cycling bridge across the Waiohine River.
An independent review confirmed the River Road to Kuratawhiti Street alignment as the best place for the new bridge, offering a quieter, more welcoming route that avoids SH2 and connects naturally with well-formed, quiet rural roads.
With support from Carterton District Council, CDTT engaged award winning bridge designer, Dan Crocker of DC Structures Studio (Cambridge), known for projects such as the Manganui Gorge Bridge. A final design was presented in May 2025.
This crossing is more than a bridge. It’s a connection between communities, a celebration of the land, and a chance for trail users to experience the stories, history, and mana of the Waiohine awa. A recent hui with representatives of local hapū Ngāti Kahukuraawhitia was described as constructive and encouraging, with support in principle and enthusiasm for including mana whenua storyboards and artworks that celebrate the deep history and identity of the Waiohine and Wairarapa.
Funding is still required for a design review and of course the construction of the bridge, however it is intended that no ratepayer money will be required to construct the bridge.
CDTT acknowledges the early mahi of the Greytown Trails Trust and will work with the Five Towns Trails Trust to help move this significant project from design to delivery.
This crossing is a vital part in expanding the Wairarapa’s growing trail network.
Adding economic and social value to the Carterton District will be a big plus once the bridge has been completed. Over $1billion, annually, is reported to contribute to regional New Zealand through cycle trails. Shouldn’t Carterton have a slice of that?
